Here are seven strategies to help you make the most of your time with your doctor

  • List Your Symptoms: Write down all your symptoms, including when they started, what makes them better or worse, and any changes over time.

  • If you have access to a portal, send an email before your appointment highlighting specific concerns or questions you’d like to discuss 
  • Bring Medical Records: If you’re seeing a new doctor or specialist, take any relevant test results or imaging to provide a comprehensive picture of your health.

  • Your doctor will likely start by asking how you have been feeling.
  • Use Descriptive Language: Be specific when describing your symptoms. Instead of saying, “I feel bad,” say, “I have a sharp pain in my lower back that worsens when I sit.”
  • Avoid Medical Jargon: Use simple terms to describe what you’re experiencing.
  • In this part of the discussion, don’t bring up the plans or follow-up questions. That will come after. 
  • Your doctor will be doing an assessment in the beginning based on what you report and then she/he will review data such as labs or radiology reports. 
  • After the information is gathered, he/she will tell you the assessment and plan.
  • Don’t Be Afraid to Say ‘I Don’t Understand’: If you’re unsure about certain details or why you’re doing a certain test, it’s better to admit it than guess.

  • Review the timeline for the labs and ask whether or not you need to fast, and confirm that the lab request has been submitted
  • Discuss how to discuss the results
  • Review the timeline for radiology imaging studies – when, why and how to discuss the results. Confirm that the request for study was submitted.
    • If it’s an MRI, discuss whether or not you will need sedatives, in case you are claustrophobic, and if you will be getting IV contrast. It’s good to know if you will be getting stuck and hydrate well before.

  • Discuss Lifestyle Factors: Be upfront about diet, exercise, alcohol use, smoking, or anything else affecting your health.
