Meet Maggie

I want to share a poem that has helped me on my mom journey, and I hope it helps you. I had a conversation this week with a client that reminded me of a poem I love, Ithaka by Cavafy. Her son was returning to school after another long surgery, and the road ahead felt daunting. It’s a situation so many of us understand—the constant challenges, the uncertainties, the hope we cling to as parents.

As we navigate this world of chronic illness or unique challenges with our kids, I think of our journey like Ithaka, a long voyage of discovery and growth. The struggles may feel heavy, but these are the moments that reveal our deepest strengths.

Cavafy writes:

“As you set out for Ithaka, hope the voyage is a long one, full of adventure, full of discovery.”

The daily hardships—doctor appointments, sleepless nights, emotional ups and downs—can feel overwhelming. But these are also the moments that build resilience, for both us and our children. We grow stronger, more compassionate, and wiser because of them.

Cavafy also reminds us:

“Laistrygonians, Cyclops, wild Poseidon—you won’t encounter them unless you bring them along inside your soul.”

This line reminds me that while challenges will always be there, how we carry them can change everything. We don’t have to fear the struggles ahead, but instead face them with grace and trust in our inner strength.

It’s not about avoiding the hard times, but learning to move through them with openness. I know this can sound like a platitude, and it’s definitely easier said than done. But it’s a truth that becomes more meaningful the more we lean into it, especially on the toughest days.

He finishes with a powerful thought:

“Keep Ithaka always in your mind. Arriving there is what you are destined for. But do not hurry the journey at all.”

Our children’s health journey may not have quick fixes or clear outcomes, but the road itself—filled with connection, learning, and love—is where we find real meaning. Celebrate the small victories, the moments of joy, and the growth you see in yourself and your child. Every step forward matters, and when we embrace the process, the journey becomes just as important as the destination.

Know that you’re not alone. Every twist and turn strengthens you and prepares you for a life filled with greater purpose and meaning. I hope this way of looking at the journey makes the load feel a little lighter.
